ABILITY. INTEGRITY. ORIGINALITY.
I'm am a recent graduate from Southeast Missouri State University, where I majored in Mass Communications with an option in Multimedia Journalism. The program, which is accredited by ACEJMC (Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications,) allowed me to grow both creatively and professionally.
I was the Editor of the Arrow, the student-run newspaper at Southeast. I have written more than 100 articles over my time there. I pitched stories, manage staff writers, edit articles, take photos and update our website and social media.
My senior year, I also held the position of president for the Missouri College Media Association. I lead their executive board and planned their state-wide conference. The experience had me working with other student journalists and media professionals to schedule speakers plan workshops and manage other logistics for the two-day conference.
I have also worked as a news intern at KRCU, the local NPR affiliate at Southeast. There I wrote, recorded and edited stories. I gained experience producing wraps, C/Cs, voicers, readers and web text versions of local stories.
EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE
PROFESSIONAL ASPiRATIONS
I hope to be a professional journalist throughout my upcoming career. Journalism was a great outlet for me in college and I find it rewarding every time I finish a story or see our final product.
I love how journalism is growing to include and increasingly require multimedia presentations.
Throughout my education, I have taken steps to become more technically proficient in audio and visual equipment at Southeast.
One of my loves outside of writing news is analyzing television and film. I think storytelling has been the through line of what I have most enjoyed throughout my life, and I want to explore television and film news and criticism, either professionally or in addition to my professional duties. I currently do this at my blog, popculturewithjay.com, where I write in my spare time.
